Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Tuesday, May 19 called on the public to remain vigilant and unrelenting in its scrutiny of the Senate’s impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Lacson said the chamber’s formal convening as an impeachment court on Monday marked a welcome turning point after last week’s chaos.

“The stark contrast between the smell of gunpowder last week and the breath of fresh air in the Senate yesterday was evident when we convened as an impeachment court after all the parliamentary procedures were strictly followed. May the public vigilance remain unabated,” Lacson said in a post on X.

The Senate formally convened as an impeachment court on Monday, May 18, after receiving the articles of impeachment from the House of Representatives, which adopted them in a 257-25-9 vote.

The convening came days after the Senate was rocked by a shooting incident on May 13 involving Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms personnel and NBI agents, amid the standoff over the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

Lacson had earlier warned that the week’s events carry a clear message about the limits of political power, saying “arrogance of power, like impunity, has its limits.”
