The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has recorded high temperatures in six areas, reaching 42°C, since Saturday, February 28.
Based on PAGASA’s heat index, the following areas experienced “danger” levels of heat:
February 28
- Iloilo City – 42°C
March 1
- Coron, Palawan – 44°C
- Iloilo City – 42°C
- Dumangas, Iloilo – 44°C
March 2
- Coron, Palawan – 42°C
March 4
- Coron, Palawan – 42°C
According to PAGASA’s heat index chart, temperatures between 42°C and 51°C are considered “danger” levels, while readings of 52°C and above fall under “extreme danger.”
PAGASA warned the public to take precautions against the heat, particularly outdoor workers who are most vulnerable to heat stroke.
The agency is also closely monitoring the potential onset of El Niño, which has a 50% chance of developing between July and December. PAGASA cautioned that if El Niño coincides with the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, its impact could be severe.
Once El Niño weakens typhoons and the Habagat, it could intensify drought conditions starting in December and lasting through the summer of 2027. PAGASA said this may influence high temperatures during the country’s next warm and dry season, prompting careful monitoring of temperature trends.
