Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso has ordered the inspection of all schools, old buildings, and government structures in the city as part of efforts to strengthen earthquake and disaster preparedness in the nation’s capital.
The directive was issued to Manila City Engineer Armando Andres during the Mayor’s regular directional meeting last Monday, and reiterated Wednesday afternoon, June 10, during the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MCDRRMC) meeting.
“Engineer Andres, please continue as per the directive last Monday that all our schools, old buildings, and government buildings must be inspected,” the Mayor said.
Inspection reports are to be submitted to MCDRRMC chief Arnel Angeles for evaluation and consideration.
Domagoso said the inspections are part of the city’s preparedness measures, noting that Metro Manila remains under threat from a major earthquake event known as “The Big One.”
The Mayor also directed Angeles and his team to reach out to counterpart DRRM agencies in Cotabato, General Santos City, and Sarangani Province — areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani — to determine if Manila’s assistance was needed.
Manila stood ready to deploy assistance to Mindanao as needed, with Domagoso describing the city’s posture as that of a good neighbor to fellow Filipinos.
“Trying to be a good neighbor to our fellow Filipinos,” Domagoso said.
