Starting Monday, June 29, 2026, mobile phones will be banned in schools in the town of Dumanjug, Cebu, Mayor Efren “Gungun” Gica announced.
In a Facebook post on Sunday night, Gica directed all school heads to confiscate mobile phones from students found bringing them to school.
“If a student brings a phone, it will be confiscated and only returned at the end of the school year,” he said.
The mayor also warned parents that non-compliance with the policy could prompt them to transfer their children to another municipality.
“We want our kids to read, study, and interact with their classmates,” Gica said. “At home, we expect parents to talk to their children, monitor what they learn in school, and encourage healthy relationships within the family. We will make sure your kids get home safely.”
To further ensure students’ safety, Gica said the local government plans to purchase school buses “as soon as possible.”
An hour later, the mayor clarified that the policy is not “for show,” citing what he described as the “truly alarming” academic standing of students.
“We are falling behind. We need to catch up,” he added.
Gica also announced that starting July, schools in Dumanjug will conduct Saturday tutorial sessions in Math, English, and Science for Grades 1 to 12. The program will also include Bible reading and values formation.
“I truly believe that when Jesus is in their hearts, they will naturally strive for excellence in everything they do,” he said.
“We want the youth of Dumanjug to be known everywhere as obedient, honest, helpful, and God-fearing individuals with excellent character. Let’s do this together!”
