The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is coordinating with the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to explore possible legal action against the operator of the Navotas Sanitary Landfill.
The landfill was struck by a massive fire that began on April 10 and continues to burn 18 days later.
Since then, air quality in Metro Manila and nearby areas has deteriorated, with pollution reaching dangerous levels.
The Philippine Space Agency reported on April 24 that air quality in Metro Manila “has not returned to normal levels.”
“On our side, we have been discussing with the Office of the Solicitor General about studying legal remedies that we can avail of moving forward,” Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna said after inspecting the landfill with other officials.
Cuna said Philippine Ecology Systems Corp. (PhilEco), the landfill’s owner, has committed to submitting a safe closure and rehabilitation plan following the DENR’s directive.
While the fire has been brought under control, the agency advised residents—particularly the elderly and children—to wear face masks, limit time outdoors, and keep windows and doors closed for their safety. — Photo from Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco
