Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson on Saturday, February 21, put to rest speculation about his political future, declaring he has no plans to seek any elective post in 2028 and will retire from public service when his Senate term ends in 2031.
Lacson, who has spent more than five decades in government, made the statement when asked about possible alignments and offers ahead of the next national elections.
“Absolutely none. I’m nearing the twilight of my career. And I am still eligible for reelection in 2031 but I am not intending to. I intend to finish my public service career in 2031, when my current or first term ends in the Senate,” he said in an interview.
The veteran lawmaker also made clear that he will not seek reelection in 2031, even if he remains eligible to do so under the Constitution.
In Filipino, Lacson summed up his position: “Walang plano sa pulitika lampas sa 2031.”
He likewise declined to speculate on reported political discussions among other personalities, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent meeting with Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo in Naga City.
Lacson said he could only confirm that the President had requested the Senate to appropriate funds under the Local Government Support Fund to augment the needs of local government units, including Naga City.
“Gusto niya ma-augment especially those hard hit by calamities. Yan ang main agenda nila,” Lacson said, referring to the purpose of the meeting.
