The Philippines has been named the world’s top retirement destination for 2026 by UK-based insurer Expatriate Group.
In its Retirement Abroad Index 2026, the Philippines earned a score of 78 out of 100, topping the list of the world’s most retiree-friendly destinations. The index evaluates countries based on healthcare access, visa requirements, cost of living, and ease of settling abroad.
Expatriate Group cited the Philippines’ “exceptional visa availability, low living costs, and one of the strongest expat integration scores in the index” as key drivers of its top ranking.
A major factor in the country’s performance is the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), which the group described as one of the most accessible retirement programs assessed.
“The country’s Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) is among the most accessible retirement programmes we assessed,” the group said. “Applicants aged 50 and over who receive a pension can qualify with a fixed deposit of $15,000 (around £11,000), with successful applicants granted long-term residency without the need for annual visa renewals. Processing typically takes four to eight weeks.”
Affordability was also highlighted as one of the country’s biggest strengths.
“A retired couple can typically live comfortably on around £750 to £1,000 per month, although costs are generally higher in Manila than in smaller cities and coastal communities. English is widely spoken and is one of the country’s official languages, reducing a common barrier to integration for UK retirees,” the group added.
However, the report noted that the Philippines received a mid-range score of 12 out of 20 for healthcare, citing disparities between urban and rural areas. While cities such as Manila and Cebu offer access to modern hospitals, healthcare standards can vary across the country.
The Department of Tourism welcomed the recognition, highlighting the SRRV as the Philippine Retirement Authority’s flagship program for foreign nationals seeking long-term residence.
The agency also noted that the latest recognition follows the Philippines’ win as Best Retirement Destination in Asia at the 2025 TripZilla Excellence Awards.
“The Philippines’ No. 1 ranking in the Retirement Abroad Index 2026 reflects the Philippine Retirement Authority’s commitment to creating an environment where retirees can live, connect, and thrive. It also underscores the country’s continued progress as a global retirement hub,” the DOT said. — Photo from the Expatriate Group
