Thailand will enter the summer season on Sunday, February 22, with temperatures that may reach 42–43 degrees Celsius or higher, the Meteorological Department said.
Sukanyanee Yawinchan, Director-General of the Thai Meteorological Department, said that areas in the northern provinces may experience hotter weather in the coming days.
She explained that the highest temperatures in the upper half of the country are at least 35°C, and that winds will shift to southerly to southeasterly directions, marking the beginning of the summer season.
However, Yawinchan said the country may experience fluctuating weather conditions due to cold air masses colliding with hot air, which may lead to summer storms such as thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated hail.
The Meteorological Department said the summer season is expected to end around May, with mid-March to April forecast to be hotter than in 2025, and certain regions such as Mae Hong Son, Lampang, and Tak potentially exceeding 42°C.
With this, Yawinchan warned of a higher risk of heat stroke during April, when temperatures could feel much higher than the actual readings on thermometers because of humidity. — Photo courtesy: Reuters
