A 2026 scientific review examined the concept of “sugar addiction,” finding that while interest in sugar withdrawal and detox timelines is growing, existing research remains inconsistent.

Published in Behavioural Brain Research, the review analyzed both preclinical animal models and human clinical studies to better understand how the brain and body respond when high sugar intake is abruptly reduced.

“Sugar addiction has been proposed as a behavioural syndrome characterised by craving, loss of control, escalation of intake, and continued use despite adverse consequences,” the researchers said.

“Although not formally recognised in current diagnostic systems, converging evidence suggests that addictive-like responding is most plausible for refined, rapidly delivered sugar vehicles (e.g., sugar-sweetened beverages) in vulnerable individuals, and overlaps substantially with loss-of-control eating presentations, including binge eating disorder (BED),” they added.

The review found that while long-term sugar consumption can alter the brain’s reward pathways—similar to addictive substances—its effects differ significantly from drug dependence.

According to the study, individuals who cut back on sugar may experience psychological and mild physical symptoms, including anxiety, irritability, headaches, and intense cravings. However, these symptoms are considerably milder compared to withdrawal from substances such as nicotine, alcohol, or opioids, and are not life-threatening.

Preclinical studies in rodents showed clear behavioral changes during sugar deprivation, but human studies revealed varying timelines for when symptoms peak and subside.

Researchers also noted that while “sugar detoxing” has gained popularity in public health discussions, differences in study methods make it difficult to establish a standardized medical timeline.

Neurologically, high sugar intake triggers dopamine release in the brain’s reward centers. When sugar is reduced, a temporary drop in dopamine levels can lead to low mood and increased cravings for sweet foods.

However, the authors emphasized that these responses reflect behavioral conditioning and pleasure-seeking rather than true physiological dependence.

IMPLICATIONS FOR DIET AND HEALTH

The findings suggest a more balanced perspective for individuals trying to reduce sugar intake.

While “sugar detoxes” are widely promoted, the researchers said managing sugar consumption is more about changing habits than undergoing a strict medical detox process.

“Integrating personalised behavioural treatment with targeted structural measures (taxation, reformulation, labelling) is most likely to reduce harm at both individual and population levels,” the researchers said.

They added that gradual reduction in refined sugar and sustainable lifestyle changes are more effective than expecting severe withdrawal symptoms.
