Paris-based luxury perfume and home fragrance brand Diptyque has sparked reactions from Filipinos after its “spiral incense” product was compared to the Philippines’ traditional mosquito coil, locally known as katol.
According to the company’s website, the product—Citronelle (Lemongrass) Incense—is priced at $68, or around ₱4,178.40.
The product description reads: “Light wisps of lemongrass escape into the air. From dusk forward, the spiral releases relaxing notes recalling the peaceful air of a water garden.”
The katol-like design quickly drew humor and reactions from Filipino netizens online.
“Lamoque Ce’gurado Tepouk,” said netizen Heinrich Palongpalong.
Another user joked, “Paano nga ulit pagbigkas ng katol sa French, Chatoullee?”
Others referenced pop culture, including the song Die With a Smile by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, with one netizen quipping: “Eau de Kateulle!” from Enj Jao Abarro.
The product has since gone viral, with many Filipinos amused by its resemblance to the locally familiar mosquito coil. — Photo from Diptyque
