Even after the downpour weakened, several areas in the City of Manila remained knee-deep in floodwaters for hours, with high tide worsening the deluge.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes described the downpour as “extraordinary,” noting that it coincided with high tide.
According to the resident meteorologist of the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MCDRRMO), the situation was deemed extraordinary due to the localized nature of the rainfall—a typical characteristic of a thunderstorm.
The MCDRRMO added that high tide reached 1.42 meters at 8:45 a.m., compounding the flooding in low-lying areas of the city.
Data from the Doppler radar at the Ospital ng Maynila also recorded 97 millimeters of rainfall between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
