A new international passenger terminal building is under construction at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao, the busiest regional airport in the Philippines, as part of a ₱1 billion total investment allocated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for improvements at the airport under the Marcos administration.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez made the disclosure in an interview on DZRH News program Special on Saturday on August 29, as part of the DZRH SONA 2026 Series featuring the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
Lopez said the construction of the new terminal is ongoing and will significantly expand the airport’s capacity, addressing the chronic congestion at what is consistently the most heavily trafficked regional airport outside Metro Manila.
“Ngayon po, ongoing yung pagtatayo natin ng panibagong PTB, International Airport po natin diyan. Tinatapos natin ‘yan. Tuloy-tuloy po ‘yan, pinopundohan po natin ‘yan. CAAP itself nagbigay po diyan ng I think another 600 million that will total to 1 billion po for the term,” Lopez said.
He said while waiting for the new terminal to be completed, the DOTr and CAAP have already addressed more immediate concerns flagged by passengers and the President himself, including fixing the air conditioning chillers that left the airport notoriously hot and upgrading comfort rooms.
He said Davao Airport, together with Siargao and Bicol airports, will be bundled for a Public-Private Partnership tender, with the private concessionaire expected to bring additional capital investment on top of the government’s own allocations.
